Candy Scarbrough says she felt "God urged" her to make her late son's birthday easier this year. That blessing came in the form of the adorable Elmo doll.

How Did Elmo Die

In 2005, Scarbrough's son, Tucker, is born with a heart defect. After many complications and a stroke, he passed away in 2009 at the age of three. Before his death, Tucker lost his beloved toy Elmo, or as he was affectionately called "Melmo".

Fast forward to this year, as his 14th birthday approaches, Scarbrough and his family reconnect with Melmo after experiencing what he calls a "goddess."

"We started him on 'Elmo's World' before he could walk," said Scarbrough, a lactation consultant from Knoxville, Tennessee. "He took her everywhere. He was a comfort game for her."

Elmo accompanied Tucker on doctor's visits and hospital stays, comforting him as a "traveling companion" through three heart-reconstructive surgeries.

With Elmo gone, Scarbrough struggles to replace the toy. "His Elmo is old and grumpy and very hairy," he explained. "The new Elmos are all silk and they talk. You won't find a fluffy old Elmo like that." (He eventually found a suitable replacement on eBay, but in a non-Elmo scene, Tucker showed interest.)

Scarbrough's Facebook friend Megan Flanagan is a former GC photographer. Penny, the site identifies with the Elmo doll in a photo that Scarborough posted to social media. They'd known each other for years, mostly professionally, but Flanagan had no idea the Elmo doll meant so much to both of them.

"That's not what I'm going to say," Scarbrough said. "He didn't know until he saw my Facebook post where I said the wrong thing that he loves Elmo. And I don't know why I said it."

Apparently Flanagan wasn't working in the studio when the Elmo doll went missing, but he kept it so the other kids could smile at the photos ⁠ — and brought it home when he was done working there. In a panic, he manages to reach Scarbrough and return the doll to its rightful owner.

"I took it back from Megan the day before Tucker's fourteenth birthday," Scarbrough said. “That's a very powerful message. Because losing a child doesn't make it any better.

Bringing Elmo back into her life is like getting a part of her son back. He continued, "Christmas was a bit painful, so we could focus on a part of Tucker's life and something that he really loved. He took it, and that was part of him inside of him."

Scarbrough said of the attention: "I can't say what that means to me... 10 years later people don't even remember I had a baby who died." "People remember something important in their lives. Knowing that people are enjoying their lives 10 years later is inspiring to me."
